I've always pondered the idea of how Jareth became the Goblin King. I have a lot of different theories about it.
Did he inherit the position from another family member? Was it a punishment? I like to think that the position was supposed to be his but he shirked the responsibility for some years refusing to become king. I think he saw the title as a burden and a curse. Goblins are part of the faerie world, yet they are no means considered equal to the faerie court. I think Jareth would rather have been king of the trooping faeries. Yet he was in line to become the next Goblin King. I imagine he had many adventures in the lands of fey before finally becoming reconcilled to his fate. So he holds a resentment as king yet he revels in the fact that the whole Underground is in his command, he is lord and master of all he surveys and that appeals to him and encourages him to act like a spoiled child. (somewhat similar to the greek myth of hades ruling the underworld because he was given no choice by zues). Anyway, this is my vision of a young Jareth finally giving into the inevitable and letting the lands of the Underground embrace him and taking the responsiblity of the powers of the title of Goblin King.
